The Dark Side of Job Loss
The Dark Side of Job Loss I wrote about my own dark side at Depression Clouds Everything. I also wrote about losing your identity (and other things) at I Lost More Than My Job 2 Years Ago. Heres input from Jeff, who left a comment on the I Lost More post: I lost most of what you lost and a large portion of my feeling of self worth as it drug on. The first big change came when closely after my father passed I lost my job. I gained a HUGE chip on my shoulder, feelings of anger, resentment, disillusionment and resounding pride yeah pride. When you should be humbling yourself to refocus and see whats wrong inside I went into the blame and criticize zone. It was everyone else and their companies I saw flaws with. It stunk! I spent weeks and months determined to show them they were all stupid and wrong. What did that invested time, energy, anger and freustration get me? NOTHING, in fact its almost cost me my marriage, my name, my friends, my family and my faith. How did I let this govern my life? There were so many more things to be thankful for and so many things to focus my energy on while I was looking but instead I chose to self destruct. My advice to all: DONT GO THERE! Go HERE: Work hard at truly building every relationship you can. You will find an opportunity, and sometimes in the least likely places. Do things for the benefit of others too. Youre struggling but serving will calm your mind and build relationships with those that could become your next coworker, employer or employee Its amazingly frustrating how so many woes of society right now are directly linked to this (crime, divorce, abuse etc). Its a hard lesson to learn. Unfortunately, based on how job seekers are still treated today, many people have yet to learn this lesson. Thanks for sharing Jeff. Elevator Questions - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Elevator Questions - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There are a lot of resources out there related to the elevator pitch. The networking gurus all agree that when it comes to building meaningful relationships the key to success is being interested in the other person. From that perspective, having an elevator pitch may sound silly. On the other hand, having good elevator questions you can pull out of your sleeve might be just what you need. What are some good elevator questions? I would say, it depends. Are you talking to someone in your industry, to a potential client, or to a complete stranger? Where are you in an actual elevator, on a plane, in the gym, or at a grocery store? Letâs assume you are in a networking event where people expect you to tell them your pitch. What questions you may ask instead? Here are some tips: At the core of the good elevator question lies CURIOSITY. What are you genuinely curious about when it comes to other people? I am interested in people stories, where they are coming from and where they are going, so I may ask, âWhat brought you here?â or âWhat would you like to get out of this event?â You want to ask something that would be easy to answer and that shows your interest in another human being. Think of what you may have in common and ask something related to it. For example, if itâs an event for coaches, I may ask,âWhat do you enjoy most about coaching?â Be yourself. If humor is natural to you, try and say something witty. If you are an analytical type, you can comment on something and ask for their opinion. I could ask, âI wonder if there is one thing that all of us have in common in this room; what do you think?â Think of what you would want to be asked if you were the other person. Do this exercise next time you bump into someone. What is a question youâd like to be asked? One Iâm thinking about is, âIf you could pick a person from this room to work on something together, who and what would it be?â After you ask a question, LISTEN. Donât think of the questions you are going to ask next. Listen for what catches your attention as the person responds. Soak into the answer as well as into the way a person answers and reflect your impression back â" for example, âWow, I would never think of that.â Let it flow and have a conversation that is built on common interest. The worst-case scenario is that you realize there is no common interest. And thatâs also a valid lesson. You may wonder, âWhat about me?â The only time to talk about you and to bring up your elevator pitch is when you see that they are curious about you. In that case they start asking you questions and youll have an opportunity to respond. But if they are not, there is no point in telling them about your business, ideas, world views, etc. They would probably be thinking, âWhy is he telling me this? I really donât care.â Iâm sure youâve been in their shoes before and know how it feels. The foundation of networking is CURIOSITY. So, maybe the best question of all to ask when you donât know where to begin is âWhat are you curious about?â Author: Henrieta Riesco is a founder of Intentional Career. Looking to boost your CV Work experience abroad might be better than another qualification - CareerAlley
Looking to boost your CV Work experience abroad might be better than another qualification - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Ones destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things. Henry Miller If you are a graduate looking to widen your career opportunities then work experience is crucial. This may sound paradoxical for graduates. How are you supposed to get your first job if it requires already having worked in a similar job before? Many large companies these days are taking advantage of the dire economic environment and using unemployed students as interns whilst selling them the spiel of providing them valuable work experience. If you are looking for an internship you will need to ensure it can directly boost your employment prospects, rather than just ticking a CV box and leaving you with no new skills except making a cold mug of coffee. So what will that involve? Think about the global economy today. Over and above your degree, what do employers, particularly those in multinational organisations, require? International awareness. As the global economy shifts from West to East, employers want to hire people who have a cultural awareness of how things work at the other end of the world. Internships in China are a growing feature on graduate CVs. Now is the time to take advantage of such a thing and you may find ,rather than simply boosting your CV for employment potential back in the West, you land a full-time graduate position in China on completion of your internship, ending up in the heart of the new global economy. Not only will you have the opportunity to develop professional skills but you will be able to add an element of character building to your CV. Entering and navigating a foreign workplace is an admirable achievement and shows bravery, an open mind and motivation; qualities all sought after by the worlds top employers. Many Chinese internships organisers also offer you Chinese language programs, again another vital opportunity worth taking advantage of. Are you willing to take the challenge to boost your job opportunities? This is a Guest post. If you would like to submit a guest post to CareerAlley, please follow these guest post guidelines.
